Sitges has been honored by Turisme de Catalunya as an adapted destination, through a study allowing them to identify those tourist products and destinations that bring together the conditions necessary to be promoted among the community of people who suffer any kind of disability, and Sitges is one of the chosen places.
Under the title “Catalunya per a un turisme accessible - Turisme per a tothom” (Catalonia in favor of accessible tourism – Tourism for all), the study identifies 18 destinations with high accessibility levels. All together 6,315 tourist facilities, resources and services were analyzed from the ten different Catalan tourism area brands (Pirineus, Val d’Aran, Ara Lleida, Diputació de Barcelona – Turisme total, Costa Brava, Costa de Barcelona – Maresme, Barcelona Turisme, Garraf, Costa Daurada and Terres de l’Ebre) keeping in mind aspects ranging from interior and exterior accessibility to sensory communication, among others.
The Garraf Nature Reserve is one of the most outstanding facilities examined in the study as it already offers two circuits adapted to the needs of the blind and people with limited mobility, information in Braille and supporting elements to develop the senses of smell, touch and hearing.
Another of Sitges’ strong points are its beaches, as several of them are adapted like the Botigues de Sitges, Garraf, Sant Sebastià and De la Barra beaches, with two parking spots reserved for the handicapped, access ramps, stepping stones down to the beach area, an amphibious chair service and an adapted WC at each of them. The Balmins beach offers the same services except for the amphibious chair and the Ribera beach has an access ramp, stepping stones down to the beach area and an adapted WC.
Finally, another of the most highly valued aspects was our accommodations, both for the quality of their services and the adaptation of facilities for people with limited mobility. Outstanding among these hotels are Dolce Sitges, Calípolis, Melià Sitges, San Sebastián Playa, Sunway Playa Golf and Port Sitges Resort.
Therefore, the effort that Sitges’ tourism-related companies are making to adapt their services and facilities to all publics is evident, as well as the Sitges Town Council’s investment in adapting its beaches. So Sitges stands as a tourist destination for a sector with enormous potential, considering that worldwide there are more than 500 million people with physical, intellectual and sensory disabilities who are able to travel.
