Outlining the profile of a Sitgetan today is a hard task, in times of important population changes and cultural exchange, and even more so to try to identify one on the street, with all the different people of so many different origins that we run into. But if we explore local profiles from the turn of last century, and observing our grandparent’s character, we can picture a man born in our town, probably the son of a fisherman, who works as a carpenter or a shopkeeper and whose main hobbies, among others, are attending dances organized by the town’s recreational associations, writing to the local weekly newspaper and participating in its traditional festivities.
Outlining a present-day profile would be an even much more complicated task, although not totally impossible. It wouldn’t be hard to find a thirty-year-old Sitgetan who just completed his or her education, goes to work daily in Barcelona, and spends his or her leisure time hanging out with friends at any of the downtown cafés.
Population Data
According to the census there were 23,590 inhabitants in 2006. Considering that the township has a surface area of 43.7 square kilometers, population density would be 454 and 539.8 inhabitants per kilometer in the years 2000 and 2006, respectively.
Migration Fluxes
Sitges’ population is characterized by its heterogeneous origins, with over 70 different nationalities. A constant increase in our township’s population can be observed since the early nineties.
This increase in population has been brought about by migratory growth. As of the year 2000, population growth reached its highest rates with the arrival of foreigners.
Today, 21% of Sitges’ population was born abroad and of this percentage, it is important to note that 63% of this section of the population is from the European continent, 29.86% from Latin American countries, 2.3% are of Moroccan origin, and finally, the remaining 4.84% are of other nationalities.
