Cowama Project

A new integrated water management system will allow us to have a much more comprehensive control of Sitges’ sea water.
Its objective is to protect swimming water from possible contaminations and to give its beaches a new sign of quality.

Sitges residents will be able to check the state of the town’s coastal water from home and in real time. A new system allowing Internet access to this information, as a part of the European project LIFE for the “Coastal Water Management” (COWAMA) Integrated Swimming Water Management, with the participation of different Mediterranean cities, like Sitges, Barcelona, Alacant, Benidorm and Torrevella, among others.

The selection of our town to participate in this innovative, pioneering environmental techniques program is motivated by the local government’s commitment to all aspects of this field, as well as the influx of tourists in Sitges and the quality of its beaches. For the new Town Council, this new control system offers a new sign of quality for the town’s beaches that, at the same time, will allow us to identify the main sources of pollution, in the case that they exist, and if there is a risk, the system will define the nature, frequency and possible duration of the pollution incident. In addition, the system will assess the different alternatives for solving the problem.

Finally, the project includes an alert system using sensors that will allow us to predict swimming water quality, but to also provide citizens with real time information over the Internet on the quality of the water.
